Bungalow House Plans

Bungalow house plans are generally narrow yet deep, with a spacious front porch and large windows allowing plenty of natural light. They are often single-story homes or one-and-a-half-story houses with a small bedroom or two on the upper floor. They typically have a detached garage, if one at all. A gabled roof with steep pitches is typicalThe exterior of bungalow designs is often influenced by Craftsman, cottage, or Arts and Crafts styles.

The bungalow is most commonly found in older neighborhoods of America. It became popular from the 1910s to the 1930s, but it remains a desired choice to build or buy today. The modern-style bungalow home plan offers open-concept floor plans, walk-in closets, and larger kitchens.

Features to Look for in a Bungalow House Design

Though the style is older, new bungalow house plans have adapted to modern needs while keeping many of the same exterior architectural elements crucial to this style. Here are some of the features you’ll find in these homes today:

  • Layout that’s smaller in width but longer in length. Though people often associate this design with limited space, larger options are available with ample square feet.

  • Covered front porch defined by wide steps and columns set in large bases and a rear porch. The porches are sometimes enclosed with screens to keep the bugs away.

  • Gable roof design with fairly steep pitches. There are frequently dormers included in this style as well, either as decorative in a one-story home or to provide light to rooms in a 1.5-story design.

  • Detached garage or no garage is common. However, there are still plenty of options with an attached garage.

  • Craftsman style influences within the architecture. Many of these homes could be considered craftsman bungalows.

  • Modern updates that fit today’s lifestyle. You’ll find homes with open floor plans, walk-in closets, split bedrooms, and more to accommodate current home trends.

Whether looking to build on a fill-in lot in an urban environment or a narrow lot in the country, bungalow style house plans are an ideal choice. No matter your situation, check out our collection and find your pefect plan.

The Bungalow House and America: An Old Passion Reawakened   It was the first symbol of suburban living – a declaration of independence from crowded apartments in urban areas and a longing to own a home and tend a garden. And today, for many of the same reasons, Generation X and Generation Y have begun to embrace the bungalow – creating a renewed interest in this house plan style and the neighborhoods where they are often found.
